Information Architecture: The Web Design Decision With the Longest Shadow
Information architecture is the least visible part of web design and the part that constrains everything after it. It decides how many clicks separate a visitor from the page that answers their question, which topics get a dedicated URL, and how authority flows through internal links. Get it right and the site can absorb years of new services, industries and case studies without a restructure. Get it wrong and every future page is a compromise wedged into a hierarchy that was never designed to hold it.
Structure is also a search decision. Search engines infer what a business is authoritative about from how its pages relate to one another, not from a single homepage claim. A site that gives each service its own page, connects those pages to the industries they serve, and links case studies back to both builds a machine-readable model of the business. Practically, this means resisting the urge to compress. A combined page covering design, development and hosting will rank for none of them and persuade nobody, because it cannot go deep enough on any single buying question. Separate pages, connected deliberately, serve both the reader and the crawler. Navigation then becomes a summary of a considered model rather than a list of links assembled by committee, and the menu stops being the place where internal politics are settled in public.
